Jesus’ teachings on wealth are perfect
Complete, mature and whole. But they sound terrible from the world’s perspective, until we align our heart with his—to glorify his Father. Then they are awesome! Will you practice what he preached?
Truth 01
Purpose
Use wealth to glorify God. Jesus lived with one purpose: glorify the Father. Until your money serves that same purpose, His financial advice will sound backwards.
Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. —John 17:1
Truth 02
Practice
Jesus meant what he said. What would it look like if we followed his financial advice? In a “worst case” scenario, we might look a lot like him.
Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say? — Luke 6:46
Truth 03
Master
Money, as an idol, steals God’s glory. Money is a great tool, but terrible master. Who you love and who you fear tells you who's really running your finances.
No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. — Matthew 6:24
Truth 04
Good
Only God is good. We come to Jesus looking for something good, and he redirects us to his Father. Anything else is the wrong good thing.
Why do you call me good? No one is good—except God alone. — Mark 10:18
Truth 05
Deception
God’s plan is better than yours. Wealth is a blessing, until you set your heart on it instead of Him. We are deceived whenever we think we have a better plan for our lives than he does.
**The worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. — Mark 4:19 **
Truth 06
Justice
There is a wisdom-wealth connection. Do something. Do it right. And be generous. Worldly wealth is a blessing, but wisdom outranks it every time.
For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. — Matthew 25:29
Truth 07
Prosperity
God made you for more. More than yourself and more than this world. Prosperity comes with responsibility. To whom much is given, much is expected.
You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself? — Luke 12:20
Truth 08
Profit
Following Jesus outweighs the cost. Revenue - Cost = Profit. It costs everything you have to follow Jesus. But not nearly what He’s worth.
And if you do not carry your own cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple. — Luke 14:27
Truth 09
Give
God is the real Giver. He doesn’t need your money. Jesus commands us to give to know him better, to enrich us, and to set us free from a bad master.
Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. — Luke 6:30
Truth 10
Reward
Maximize your eternal net worth. How? Be worthy of trust, whether you have little or much, using worldly wealth to gain true riches, in both stewardship and ownership roles. Use what you can't keep to gain what you can't lose.
I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings. Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much." — Luke 6:30
